Who are the other campers?
More than anything else, Timanous (pronounced Tih - mon - us) is a friendly
place. Many of the counselors were campers themselves and they live right
in the same cabin as you. The campers come from all over the world. Very
few know each other before they come to camp so it is easy to make make friends.
What will I do at camp?
There are many cool things to do including shooting a .22 rifle, water
skiing (we have two boats), sailing, swimming, kayaking, windsurfing, a climbing
wall, archery, handicrafts which include tie dying, mask making, pottery,
and woodworking where you can make almost anything including remote controlled
airboats, sailboats, lamps, CD racks, and furniture. Camping trips go out
almost daily and there might be a three day canoe trip or a two day hike
up Mt. Washington. A five day trip is offered for the real tripper. There
are all kinds of team and individual sports to play like soccer, baseball,
tennis, and basketball.. It doesn't matter if you are good at any sport.
There are plenty of other things to do or the counselors will teach you.
We also have lots of great special events like the 4th of
July bonfire (the biggest you have ever seen). All-camp (counselors included)
capture-the-flag games. Last summer we had the Timanolympics with our own
version of weight lifting (cereal boxes), triathlon (swimming, canoeing,
and running), and javelin (throwing an arrow). Movies and dancing might occupy
an evening. A trip to the beach is a great day and weekly cookouts give you
a chance to try your outdoor cooking skills. You won't believe the counselor
horse races and other crazy evenings we have throughout the summer.
Will I get homesick?
Because there are so many things to do and the constant companionship
of the other campers and counselors, homesickness is not usually a problem.
The days go by very fast, and before you know it, the summer will be over.
Where do I live?
You will be in a cabin with 10 other boys your age and three or four counselors.
These are not luxury condos but simple wooden building with no electricity
or running water. Don't worry, there are regular toilets and hot showers
available in separate buildings nearby.
How's the food?
Our chef, Bob, has been at Timanous for 23 years and does a great job
preparing things the kids like to eat. Breakfast always has two courses,
one cereal (hot and cold) followed by pancakes, Dunkin Donuts, bacon and
eggs, etc. Lunch is our big meal of the day and is always all you can eat.
Dinner is usually lighter but may include pizza, spaghetti, or sandwiches.
We always offer a salad and vegetarian dishes or peanut butter and jelly
if you prefer.
Will I get better at doing things?
You choose your activity. In the morning period, the counselors work on
improving your skills whether in tennis, swimming, baseball, sailing, etc.
The afternoons are geared more towards recreation. There is no question that
you will improve and learn many new things from your time at camp.
Can I bring my Ipod, computer, Nintendo, or air conditioner?
We guarantee that you will not need any of these things. If you play an
instrument, bring it, but leave the other stuff at home. We also provide quiet
time for you to read, write letters, and enjoy the outdoors.
