Opening day was a picture perfect day which was a pleasant surprise after 2 weeks of rain! The boys arrived by car, bus and plane and it was great to have camp busy again. Thursday evening, after dinner, we all met in the hall to talk about the upcoming summer, introduce the counselors and learn about some of the activities.
Friday morning we again woke to sun and camp was off and running. We learned our weekly table assignments on our way to breakfast and we will sit at these tables for the first week. Usually you sit at a table with people not in your cabin - it's a great way to meet new people.
The first three days are orientation and the boys go with their cabin to an assigned activity. During that time, all cabins will go to woodshop, riflery, archery, and sailing as the boys must learn the safety rules prior to actually doing the activity. The new campers were also had swim tests and the swim groups have now been assigned.
A little rain could not dampen anyone's spirits for "Friday Candy". Everyone gets 2 candy bar and a soda on Friday afternoon -- lots to chose from so the decision can be hard!
Saturday night we had our first cookouts. Each cabin has their own cookout site and as a cabin, they collect wood and once the counselor has started the fire, cook their dinner. That evening, the activity was "Cabin activities" and each cabin came up with their own plan.
Although we had a few showers those first few days, Sunday was our first "rainy" day. It sprinkled during chapel, rained in the afternoon and was still raining when it was time for Council Fire so reminiscent of last year, our first Council Fire was held inside. Hopefully the rest will all be outside!
Monday, the boys will start "sign-ups" and they will chose their activities. Camping trips will start with the Herons going out first.
It has been a great start - the new campers have quickly gotten into the program and everyone seems to be having a great time. We would like some sun!
