Summer 2009

Week Five

Monday was the first day of the second half -- still hard to believe we have reached that point. A great group of 34 boys arrived on Monday and have quickly gotten into the program.

On Wednesday, a group of 12 campers and 3 counselors left for Baxter State Park where they camped for 2 nights and climbed Mt. Katahdin, the tallest mountain in Maine, on Thursday. Pictures from the Trip.

Relatives from Big Wohelo joined us Wednesday evening for dinner.

A group of soccer players participated in a tournament at a neighboring camp on Wednesday and Thursday.

A large group of campers and counselors were up early Saturday morning to participate in the annual Casco Day Road Race, a 4 mile road race which all participating campers trained hard for. With many photographers in attendance, there are too many pictures for this page but they can be seen here.

Our sailing team was at Wohelo on Saturday for a regatta and a group of Wohelo girls came to Timanous on Sunday for "Sunday Sailing". At the same time, a group of Timanous boys went to Wohelo to play tennis and archery.

We continue to think it can't possibly rain any more but then it does! The sun is shinning today and it is actually predicted to be a sunny week! Last Monday, the day the second half boys arrived, may have been one of the nicest days we have had with a high of 81. It went down hill after that with rain every day but Wednesday, pouring rain on Friday and couple days where it never got about 65!! We had torrential rain on Sunday afternoon with a never ending thunderstorm which forced us to have our second inside council fire of the summer. With a week of sun predicted, maybe we will really start to dry out!

  Council Fire

Sunday evenings, after dinner, the whole camp gathers for our weekly Council Fire. It starts with the lighting of the fire which is done basically by rubbing 2 sticks together but in this case, one stick is a large spindle which all the campers help spin by pulling on a rope. The spinning of the spindle causes the friction which creates the spark used to make the fire. After the fire is started, we sing camp songs, any awards won that week are announced along with the weekly results of the cabin inspections. My favorite part of Council Fire is when the counselors commend campers who they felt did or accomplished something special that week.

It's not easy to get pictures at Council Fire but these were taken by a parent and we greatly appreciate her sharing them with us!
